When the lights go down in the city

After 10 years the west span of the Bay Bridge turns off the lights

San Francisco, California – The lighting decoration of the Willie Brown Bridge, also known as the western span of the Bay Bridge, was only supposed to last a couple of years. But the lighting grew very popular with not only tourists, but locals as well, and the lighting managed to last a couple of years longer.

Leo Villareal, the artist behind the lights said he often refers to the lights in a creative way, “I often describe the piece as a digital campfire.”

Now 10 years later, the lights have finally come down and the Bay Bridge no longer has the festive look that so many adored. It is reported that the lights were taken down because they were suffering under harsh weather conditions.

Efforts were made to raise money to keep the lights up, but millions of dollars in operations will be needed. Only less than $60,000 was raised.

Ben Davis, the Illuminate Founder is currently working to raise money to bring a new and improved lighting display to the Bay Bridge. The new lighting decoration will come at a cost of $11 million and will have twice as many as the old one.
