Beyond the Prompt: Why Netflix is Betting on Ben Affleck’s “Creator-First” AI Tools for Future Originals

Unlike generative AI models that create video from text prompts, InterPositive focuses on post-production tools designed to assist, not replace, filmmakers. Affleck, who founded the Los Angeles-based startup in 2022, emphasized that the technology is built to handle the “technical grunt work” of production.

Key capabilities of the InterPositive toolkit include:

  • Digital Cleanup: Removing stunt wires and riggings automatically.
  • Lighting Adjustments: Correcting or shaping lighting in post-production using models trained on a film’s specific footage.
  • Reframing & Missing Shots: Helping directors reframe a scene or “find” a shot that was missed during the primary shoot using existing dailies.

“It’s not about text-prompting or generating something from nothing,” Affleck said in a video accompanying the announcement. “You have to create your movie essentially first before you can build your model.”

Strategic Timing for Netflix

The acquisition comes just days after Netflix received a $2.8 billion breakup fee from Warner Bros. Discovery, after the latter chose a “superior” merger proposal from Paramount Skydance. By acquiring InterPositive, Netflix is reinvesting a portion of those funds into proprietary technology that it plans to offer exclusively to its creative partners.

Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, stated that the move aligns with the company’s belief that “innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them.”
