End of an Era: Reed Hastings to Exit Netflix Board
Netflix Co-Founder and Executive Chairman to Step Down in June to Focus on Philanthropy
Los Gatos, Ca – Netflix announced that its co-founder and long-time leader, Reed Hastings, will officially step down from the Board of Directors. Hastings, who transitioned from co-CEO to Executive Chairman in early 2023, informed the company on April 10 that he will not seek re-election at the upcoming annual stockholders’ meeting in June.
The announcement coincided with Netflix’s Q1 2026 earnings report, framing the move as an orderly conclusion to a leadership transition that began years ago. Hastings, now 65, indicated he intends to dedicate his future efforts to philanthropy and other personal pursuits.
A Legacy of “Member Joy”
In a statement reflecting on his nearly three-decade journey, Hastings emphasized that his most significant achievement was not any single business deal, but the cultivation of the company’s unique corporate culture.
“My real contribution at Netflix wasn’t a single decision; it was a focus on member joy, building a culture that others could inherit and improve, and building a company that could be both beloved by members and wildly successful for generations to come.”
Hastings co-founded Netflix in 1997 with Marc Randolph, initially as a DVD-by-mail service. Under his tenure, the company famously pivoted to streaming in 2007, effectively dismantling the traditional video rental industry and later challenging the Hollywood studio system by producing original content.
The Final Hand-Off
The departure marks the final step in a succession plan that has seen Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters take the reins as co-CEOs. While Hastings remained an active advisor as Executive Chairman, his exit from the board signifies a complete transfer of governance to the next generation of leadership.
