Security Guard Bloodied in Tenderloin Brawl as Mayor Daniel Lurie Observes Street Altercation.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Chaos erupted on the edge of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood Thursday evening as two men were arrested following a violent altercation with Mayor Daniel Lurie’s security detail. While the mayor was unharmed, the confrontation left one police officer bleeding from a head injury.

The incident unfolded shortly before 6 p.m. near Cedar and Polk Streets. According to local reports and witness accounts, Mayor Lurie was traveling in a black SUV when a group of individuals blocked the vehicle’s path. The mayor reportedly stepped out of the vehicle to personally ask the group to move.

What began as a verbal request quickly turned physical. According to the San Francisco Police Department, one man in the group began acting erratically. When an officer from the mayor’s security detail intervened, the situation escalated into a grapple. Video obtained by Mission Local shows a tense struggle where the suspect slammed the officer to the ground. The officer reportedly struck his head on the pavement, resulting in a laceration that left him bleeding from the back of his head.

Police quickly flooded the area, deploying more than a dozen officers to secure the scene. Two suspects were taken into custody. Tony Phillips, 44, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a peace officer with a deadly weapon, resisting a peace officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Abraham Simon, 33, was also arrested and charged in connection with the brawl after attempting to flee the scene.

Subsequent surveillance footage released on Friday has sparked debate online, with some clips appearing to show the security officer initiating physical contact by shoving Phillips before the situation turned into a full-blown scuffle.

The incident has once again placed a national spotlight on the Tenderloin, an area long associated with public drug use and street violence. Mayor Lurie, who often walks the city to speak with residents, appeared distressed at the scene but confirmed he was not involved in the actual fight.
